Weekend baseball recap: Another round of series wins for MSU, Ole Miss, and USM

Another weekend of college baseball is in the books with all three of Mississippi’s major programs taking care of business.

Mississippi State (8-4) brought out the brooms for a clean sweep while Ole Miss (8-5) and Southern Miss (8-4) took two out of three against their opponents.

Mississippi State vs. Mount St. Mary’s
Game one (Mississippi State 12, Mount St. Mary’s 2)

Recap: An explosive bottom of the seventh inning from Mississippi State’s offense turned a relatively close game into a blowout to begin the series.

Winning pitcher: Nate Dohm — Eight strikeouts and only one earned run surrendered off of four hits through seven innings pitched

Impact batter: David Mershon — Three hits, two scores, and one RBI.

Game two (Mississippi State 7, Mount St. Mary’s 2)

Recap: The Bulldogs were strong on the mound and solid at the plate, scoring runs in multiple innings to take control of the series in the Saturday doubleheader.

Winning pitcher: Khal Stephen — Nine strikeouts and no runs allowed despite giving up six hits through six innings pitched.

Impact batter: Dakota Jordan — Two hits, one home run, and two RBIs.

Game three (Mississippi State 6, Mount St. Mary’s 0)

Recap: A dominant showing on the mound gave Mississippi State its first shutout since 2021 to finalize the clean sweep over the Mountaineers.

Winning pitcher: Jurrangelo Cijntje — 10 strikeouts amassed and only four hits allowed through 6.2 innings pitched in the shutout.

Impact batter: Dylan Cupp — One hit and two RBIs.

Ole Miss vs. Iowa
Game one (Ole Miss 7, Iowa 13)

Recap: Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth, two sacrifice flies and a trio of walked batters with the bases loaded allowed Ole Miss to knot things up, but the Hawkeyes put six runs on the board in the top of the ninth to take game one at Swayze Field.

Losing pitcher: Conner Spencer — One strikeout recorded, but six earned runs allowed in 0.1 inning pitched. Gunnar Dennis got the start, striking out eight, but surrendering five earned runs in the loss.

Impact batter: Raider Tello (Iowa) — Two hits, one home run, and two RBIs.

Game two (Ole Miss 12, Iowa 5)

Recap: The Rebels were down 5-1 to begin the bottom of the third inning, but scored 11 unanswered runs to get their first win over the Hawkeyes in the series.

Winning pitcher: Austin Simmons — Nothing allowed in two innings pitched. JT Quinn got the start but was quickly pulled after five runs were surrendered during his 2.2 innings on the mound.

Impact batter: Andrew Fischer — Three hits, two home runs, and five RBIs.

Game three (Ole Miss 8, Iowa 3)

Recap: A four-run bottom of the fifth highlighted a good offensive showing for Ole Miss while the pitching was dominant in all but one inning to take the series.

Winning pitcher: Grayson Saunier — Two strikeouts recorded and only two hits given up in the series win.

Impact batter: Eli Berch — Three hits, two scores, and one RBI.

Southern Miss vs. Indiana State
Game one (Southern Miss 5, Indiana State 1)

Recap: The Golden Eagles allowed one run in the top of the first inning, but shut the Sycamores down the rest of the way while finding an offensive burst in the bottom of the seventh to claim game one of the series.

Winning pitcher: Nikko Mazza — Eight strikeouts and only one run given up off of three hits in seven innings pitched.

Impact batter: Slade Wilks — One hit, one home run, and two RBIs.

Game two (Southern Miss 6, Indiana State 2)

Recap: Southern Miss scored four runs to start the game and held Indiana State scoreless in all but two innings to take control of the series with the chance at the team’s first sweep of the season.

Winning pitcher: Billy Oldham — Seven strikeouts recorded and only two earned runs allowed off of three hits in five innings pitched.

Impact batter: Carson Paetow — Three hits, one home run, and one RBI in the series winner.

Game three (Southern Miss 5, Indiana State 12)

Recap: The Sycamores were all over the Golden Eagles’ Sunday pitching early in the contest, taking a 5-0 lead off of a grand slam in the top of the first, and Southern Miss was never able to catch up.

Losing pitcher: Will Armistead — Four strikeouts amassed, but seven earned runs surrendered in three innings pitched.

Impact batter: Parker Stinson — Three hits, one home run (grand slam), and five RBIs.
