The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is warning the public to expect an uptick in black bear sightings.
Officials said Tuesday that male bears have departed from their homes in pursuit of a new dwelling place. These bears are also pursuing mates and food as the winter months near.
“This time of year, young males have left the areas they grew up in, looking to establish new home ranges,” a statement from the department reads. “Older males are out searching for mates, and all bears are starting to focus more on food as they get ready for the fall and winter months.”

MDWFP further noted that it has received multiple reports of one particular bear making its way through north Mississippi, traveling east. From the end of May until the middle of July, the furry friend traveled from DeSoto County into Tishomingo County and later ventured into Alabama.
“Almost every time someone spotted him, he was munching on fruit from a fruit tree (he really enjoyed the pear trees) – and based on the timing and a few distinct features, MDWFP biologists are nearly certain it was the same bear the whole time,” the department stated.
Officials said that reports about the bear were a great indicator that migration is picking up statewide. Folks who happen to spot a bear from afar are urged to give it space, avoid feeding it, and report its presence to the proper authorities.
