Wildlife officials in Mississippi are warning the public about an imposter sharing false information online.
A social media account intentionally designed to mimic the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks recently took to the internet to post that baiting and feeders will be allowed on all public hunting lands during the 2025-26 hunting season. The account is fake and does not represent the state agency, authorities report.
“This information is false and did not come from MDWFP,” a statement from the department reads. “Official hunting regulations and announcements are only released through MDWFP’s verified channels, including our website and official social media accounts. We encourage hunters to always verify information directly from MDWFP before sharing.”
Feeding and baiting wildlife on public hunting land is a Class II violation, which could result in a violator facing between $100 and $500 in fines, and possibly up to six months in jail.
Outdoors enthusiasts in Mississippi are urged to visit the department’s official website for hunting rules and regulations, and to avoid falling prey to misinformation online.
