William Carey officials are mourning the death of former Crusader soccer player Santiago Cardona.
Cardona, a native of Colombia, is confirmed to have passed away on Thursday, though details surrounding his death have not been released. He was 20 years old.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of one of our own, Santiago Cardona. Santiago was a member of our men’s soccer team last season, a kind-hearted, hardworking young man who brought joy and effort to every training session and game,” an official statement from Carey’s soccer team reads.
“His positive spirit touched everyone around him, and his loss is deeply felt across our program and university community. Please keep Santi’s family, friends, and teammates in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Santi. You will always be part of the Carey family.”
Cardona appeared in 13 games as a freshman in 2024, putting one ball in the net and assisting on a goal. At this time, Crusader officials are asking folks to pray for the player’s family, friends, and teammates.
