A child has passed away following a drowning incident in Monroe County.
Officials confirm that 10-year-old Treven Pitts died in a Birmingham, Alabama, children’s hospital on Monday following an incident that happened in Mississippi one day prior.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident took place at a pond near Smithville Road and Parham Store Road on Sunday afternoon. Two children were reportedly involved in the accident. One is reported to have attempted to help the other.
First responders arrived at the scene and were able to rescue both youth. Both adolescents were hospitalized. Pitts passed away from his injuries, while the other, unidentified, child was released from medical care.
