After we previously received word that Pass Christian Alderwoman Betty Sparkman was suspending her reelection campaign, the official paperwork to do so has been filed.
On Monday, the city of Pass Christian released a public notice, informing citizens that “Sparkman provided written notice to the city clerk and election commission that she withdrew as an independent candidate for the position of Alderman of Ward 1 for the upcoming general election to be held on June 3, 2025.”

Pass Christian city attorney Malcolm Jones researched the matter and advised that the withdrawal was untimely and legally ineffective because absentee and regular ballots had already been printed before the candidate’s notice was received by the city clerk. Based on these circumstances, the city is required to use existing ballots that include Sparkman’s name.
Sparkman is being challenged by Republican Barry Dreyfus, but with her withdrawal, he is the only candidate seeking the office.
Sparkman was first elected to alderwoman in Ward 1 in 2021, defeating former Alderman Buddy Clarke. She ran as an independent with Clarke as a Republican.
Under state law, the city’s election commission is required to count all ballots cast for the race, even those cast in favor of Sparkman. With the permission of Sparkman, the election commission is notifying voters that even with her name is on the ballot, she does not intend to serve as alderwoman.
“Dear Friends, I want to let you know that I have decided not to run for reelection as alderwoman,” Sparkman wrote on social media. “I believe my time and talents will be of better use elsewhere. It has been an honor to represent the people of Ward 1. Thank you.”
According to city officials, if Sparkman does receive a majority of votes and has a change of heart, she can still take office. However, if she receives a majority of votes and maintains her decision not to serve, a special election will be held for the position.
