The Mississippi Mud Monsters have added another skyscraper to the club’s pitching stable — and could possibly form a viable basketball roster for the offseason.
Joining James Boeree, a 7-foot-2 right-hander from Australia, who also happens to be the tallest pitcher in recorded baseball history, is Brenton Thiels. The right-handed hurler, standing at 7 feet tall, is from Denham Springs, La. The duo is believed to be the first of its kind in the sport, as no other baseball team has reported having two 7-footers on its roster.

Thiels was a journeyman in college, making stops at Barton Community College in Kansas, LSU Eunice, Louisiana Tech, and the University of West Alabama, where he completed his career in 2023. He appeared in 10 games during his final season at West Alabama, recording 13 strikeouts and just 5 walks across 13.2 innings.
He has also spent time in professional baseball with two MLB Partner League clubs, the American Association’s Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the Atlantic League’s Gastonia Ghost Peppers.
The acquisition of Thiels wasn’t the only player announcement made by the Frontier League club this weekend. On Saturday, the Mud Monsters picked up former Southern Miss southpaw Ben Riley Flowers for bullpen depth.
