A Hernando alderman has proposed to rename a city street in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Ward 5 Alderman Kit Kitchens announced Friday that he will introduce a motion at Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting to rename a street in memory of Kirk, who founded the national youth organization Turning Point USA.
“Charlie Kirk was a one-of-a-kind individual who loved the Lord, stood firm in his beliefs, and showed us how to debate with conviction, respect, and peace,” Kitchens said in a statement. “By dedicating a street in his name, we can ensure that future generations in Hernando are reminded of the importance of faith, courage, and open dialogue in the public square.”
Kitchens said possible streets for renaming include Center Street and Losher Street, both of which are directly tied to Hernando’s town square. He emphasized that community feedback will guide his proposal.
“Like Charlie would want, I want to hear from the people of Hernando,” Kitchens said.
If the street renaming motion were to be approved, Hernando would become one of the first communities in the nation to permanently honor Kirk. The alderman also referenced similar efforts in Florida and South Carolina.
“Hernando has the opportunity to set an example, along with Florida and South Carolina, this Tuesday,” Kitchens said. “Let’s come together and make history by recognizing a man who inspired countless Americans to speak boldly, stand firmly, and engage respectfully.”
Kirk was shot and killed during a campus speaking event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
