The city of Vicksburg is increasing officer pay and launching a new recruitment campaign as part of its efforts to strengthen the police department and improve public safety.
Under the new plan, non-certified officers will have a starting salary of $52,500 and certified officers a starting salary of $54,500, with additional pay based on experience. City officials say the raises make Vicksburg one of the most competitive law enforcement employers in the entire state.
“From day one, I made it clear that public safety would be a top priority, and this announcement makes good on that promise,” Mayor and Police Commissioner Willis Thompson said. “We are investing in the people who protect this community, and we are doing it all within our existing police department budget.”
Officers with the Vicksburg Police Department also receive employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as life insurance, state retirement benefits, and paid holidays and leave time.
“We aren’t just raising pay — we’re raising standards,” Thompson continued. “Vicksburg deserves a police department powered by dedicated, motivated officers who are committed to excellence. If you feel called to serve and lead, we want you with us in Vicksburg.”
Officials say the department is already accepting applications as part of its renewed hiring push. Those interested in joining the Vicksburg Police Department can email vpdrecruitment@vicksburg.org.
