A Mississippi college student was arrested after a search of his dorm turned up an assault rifle and marijuana.
The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office announced it arrested Mario King on Wednesday after getting a tip that a group of individuals inside a dorm room at Coahoma Community College were in possession of firearms and illegal drugs. Prior to deputies arriving, campus police identified and located the individuals involved.
A search of the dorm room resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of marijuana, an AR-15 rifle, a digital scale, and $213 in U.S. currency, a news release from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office noted.
“Five students were detained and transported to the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. During questioning, one student initially stated that he was forced to bring the marijuana into the dorm room,” the release said. “However, video footage later contradicted that statement. After being advised that their actions were recorded, student Mario King admitted possession of the firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.”
King was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm on educational property, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
“The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the students at Coahoma Community College and the Campus Police Department for their assistance and diligence in helping ensure the safety of faculty, staff, and students,” the release concluded.
