Nearly 50,000 power outages have been reported across Mississippi following severe weather that struck much of the state on Wednesday night.
As of Thursday morning, the lights were out at 48,000 homes and businesses as a result of heavy winds and thunderstorms. Outages were most prevalent in the southwest portion of the state with Amite, Franklin, Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, and Pike counties taking the biggest hit. Additionally, 7,000 outages were reported in Hinds County.
Damage has been reported in different areas and includes downed power lines and downed trees. In some places, traveling is difficult. Notably, Southwest Community College confirmed that five trees fell on the library at its Summit campus.
“Our campus sustained damage from tonight’s storm. Numerous large trees and power lines are down, but the full extent of the damage is still unclear,” an official statement from the community college reads. “Five trees have fallen on the library. Please avoid driving on campus until roads are cleared and cleanup is complete. We are thankful that all students and staff on campus are safe!”
The good news for Mississippians is that things are expected to clear up on Thursday but with cooler temperatures.
