A K-9 unit helped law enforcement track down and arrest a man accused of shooting at officers in Jackson.
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said Capitol Police officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle with no license plate on Terry Road near Santa Clair Street at around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The driver reportedly failed to stop, and two passengers are said to have jumped out of the vehicle and fled into a wooded area.
The driver then reportedly discharged a weapon at the officers before wrecking the vehicle on Woodbine Street.
The driver then fled into a wooded area, per authorities. Capitol Police K-9 officers were called to the scene and, with their help, law enforcement officials located the driver, identified as 41-year-old Stanley Smith.
Smith was taken into custody with no further incident, police said. He is charged with felony fleeing, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm.
No status was provided on the other two individuals who jumped out of the vehicle Smith was driving.
