A Texas juvenile is in custody after a bomb threat was called into Oxford Middle School on Tuesday.
Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen said the call came to the school’s front office from a blocked caller ID. School resource officers immediately placed the educational facility on lockdown and first responders arrived at the scene to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Officials then set up a perimeter and incident command with a plan for staff to evacuate students to an off-campus site where they were reunified with their families. Once the school was evacuated, officers and K-9 units swept the building room by room to check for any threats.
Investigators then assessed the origin of the call and were ultimately able to pinpoint it to a juvenile in Texas. The unidentified individual is now in the custody of law enforcement.
“The safety of the students in our community remains our top priority at the Oxford Police Department,” McCutchen said. “We are grateful for our relationship with the Oxford School District and their dedication to school safety. This is why we it’s so helpful to work together with our school district and other local emergency responders to train these scenarios like we did this past January.”
A multi-agency effort resulted in officials responding to the incident quickly and successfully investigating it.
