A man who once took the oath to serve and protect his community is now behind bars for child sex crimes.
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced Tuesday that former Reservoir police officer Rodney Jernigan has been sentenced on two counts of child exploitation. Jernigan was sentenced to 40 years in prison and must serve 20 of those day-for-day before being eligible for parole. He is also required to register as a sex offender.

This case, according to law enforcement, originated from tips from concerned parents about their children being solicited online by Jernigan for sexually explicit photos and videos.
Jernigan was initially arrested and charged with statutory rape of a teenager in Smith County in 2024. He was still on the Reservoir police squad at the time, but was promptly fired in light of the allegations against him. While on bond, the defendant was caught making contact with a child through social media.
“Our investigators and prosecutors are committed to holding individuals who exploit children accountable for their crimes. We are proud to work with our law enforcement partners to help these victims achieve justice and closure, and help protect other children from abuse,” Fitch said. “If you suspect a child is being exploited or abused, please report it to my office. Together, we can make Mississippi a safer place for our children.”
This case was investigated and prosecuted by the Mississippi Attorney General‘s Office, with assistance from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Raleigh Police Department, Faribault County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota, and District Attorney Chris Hennis’ office.
In addition to his jail time, Jernigan was ordered to pay a $1,000 assessment to the Victims of Human Trafficking and Commercial Sexual Exploitation Fund and $1,000 to the Mississippi Children’s Trust Fund. Those who may have information about child being sexually exploited online are urged to report it to 1-800-843-5678 or online.
