As Americans enjoy the nation’s 250th year of independence, Mississippi fishermen can enjoy public waters freely.
July 4 is recognized as a free fishing day statewide, with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announcing that folks can cast rods and reels at most public bodies of water without worrying about having a license.
Officials say free fishing days present a golden opportunity to try out fishing for the first time, or for seasoned anglers to introduce someone new to the sport.
“We encourage everyone to enjoy Mississippi’s abundant fishing and boating opportunities,” a release from MDWFP reads “Whether you are an experienced angler or looking to try fishing for the first time, this celebration offers a chance to get outdoors, make memories, and introduce someone new to fishing.”
It is worth noting that fishing permits are required at state fishing lakes and state park lakes on Independence Day, but all other public bodies of water are clear.
