Former President Bill Clinton will be the latest power player within the national Democratic party to campaign for Mississippi U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom.
Political action committee Mississippi Forward announced the 42nd president will headline its campaign event on Friday in Tupelo. Additional details, including time and venue, have not yet been announced. Clinton is expected to stump for other Mississippi Democrats during the trip, as well.
Colom, a Columbus-based district attorney, is seeking to unseat Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith when midterms are held Nov. 3.
Clinton joins other White House alums on the campaign trail for Colom, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was in Columbus last week for a rally. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stumped for Colom on the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Tuesday.
Former President Barack Obama cut a commercial for Colom earlier this month, saying, “Mississippi, it’s time for a change, and that’s why you need to send Scott Colom to the Senate.”
Also expected to be at the event with Clinton is political strategist James Carville and former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. Landrieu also served as lieutenant governor of Louisiana and was a senior advisor to President Joe Biden.
Hyde-Smith, on the other hand, welcomed President Donald Trump to Mississippi earlier this week. During a rally in Corinth, the president encouraged voters to not only reelect Hyde-Smith but also vote Republican down the ballot to help his party maintain control of both congressional chambers.
