A young girl in the capital city is dead after what appears to be an accidental shooting.

According to the Jackson Police Department, an 11-year-old girl got hold of a gun that was out in the open of her Ginger Drive home around 9 a.m. on Sunday. The gun eventually fired and left the girl with a gunshot wound to her face.

Officers responded to the home after a parent came back into the room and found the child. After being taken to the hospital, the child passed away.

The incident is classified as a “death pending” by the JPD as investigators seek to gather additional information from the parent of the victim.
