Gunfire erupted at the intersection of Fourth Street and North Main Street around midnight Friday when a large crowd was gathered for a block party following the homecoming football game at Leland High School. DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell and federal agents have both said the incident appears to have been sparked by a disagreement among several individuals.
“It wasn’t just one shooter. That was a whole group that got into an argument, a fight, and guns erupted in a crowd,” Tindell said Monday morning. “Some bystanders were injured, as well as some of the gunmen themselves.”
In total, hundreds of shots were fired, and as of Thursday afternoon, two of the injured were in critical condition.
The deceased were identified as Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18; Amos Brantley, Jr., 18; and Jamichael Jones, 34.
The shooting in Leland was one of several, albeit unrelated, shootings that made for a deadly weekend across Mississippi.
On the campus of Heidelberg High School after the school’s homecoming football game on Friday, the bodies of two people, including a pregnant woman, were found. A third person died from the incident on Tuesday. So far, six suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
On Saturday night, more gunfire boomed, this time on the campus of Alcorn State University in Lorman. When campus police officers responded to the scene inside the Industrial Technology Building, one person was found dead and two injured. An arrest was made in the case Thursday.
