While the winner of the race for the White House may not be declared by Tuesday night’s end, Republican nominee Donald Trump was announced victorious in Mississippi at the same time polls across the state were closing.
Trump has now won Mississippi three election cycles in a row. He clinched his third consecutive GOP nomination on the same night as the state’s primary election in March. During that election, he received 92.5% of Republican support. On Tuesday night, when facing Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Trump was quickly determined to have more voters than Harris in the historically red state.
Trump served one term as president before being ousted by Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Biden chose to suspend his reelection campaign in July paving the way for Vice President Harris to garner the nomination.
Trump or Harris must receive 270 electoral votes to win the election.
Residents in Mississippi also voted Tuesday for U.S. House and U.S. Senate, along with various judgeship roles. Full election results can be found here.
