Biloxi will soon have a new monument. A monument to Gold Star Families will join the World Wars monument, the Purple Heart Monument, and the USS Biloxi memorial. The new memorial will honor the patriotism and sacrifice of the families who have lost loved ones in combat or military operations. The monument will be erected alongside three other military memorials in Biloxi’s Guice Park, located on U.S. 90 at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor.

Keesler Federal Credit Union, the City of Biloxi and the Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation are sponsoring the new monument. A groundbreaking ceremony will be July 23rd and the monument is scheduled to be completed and dedicated in late November 2019.

“This is an outstanding addition to the outstanding collection of war memorials we have at this high profile location,” said Biloxi Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich. “I especially want to thank Chief Administrative Office Mike Leonard, a retired Marine colonel, for spearheading this project. It has been very special to him and very special to the entire city.”

Keesler Federal is donating the funds to buy and erect the monument.  The city will provide the site and arrange for construction of the plaza or foundation. The Gulf Coast Gold Star Families committee has assisted with the design of the monument.  The Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, a non-profit organization located in Louisville, Ky., has sponsored similar Gold Star monuments around the country in order to raise public awareness about Gold Star families.
