Bonnet Carré Spillway officially closed

All flow from the Bonnet Carré Spillway has been stopped. A tweet over the weekend from Governor Phil Bryant said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers notified him of the completion of the closures on Saturday saying it was “good news for the Gulf.”

The Spillway was first opened on February 27th and then for a second time on May 10th where it remained open ever since.  During the time that the Bonnet Carré was open, the freshwater pouring in from the Spillway has been the suspected cause of over 100 dolphin deaths in Mississippi and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources has said that brown shrimp and oyster populations have been largely depleted due to the opening.

“We know this is the first step in a long recovery process,” said Congressman Steven Palazzo. “I will continue working with the appropriate agencies to ensure that we restore the health of the Mississippi Sound.”
