A Mississippi couple attempting to aid in the search for a missing child while on horseback has been hospitalized following a crash in Copiah County.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports that 41-year-old Brent Boyd and 40-year-old Shameka Boyd have been taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center after an SUV driven by 34-year-old Justin Durr collided with the couples’ horses Sunday evening on Highway 51 North near Martinsville. The horses did not survive the accident.

Brent and Shameka had been seeking to assist law enforcement in a multi-agency search for six-year-old Caden Newman who went missing on Saturday. Newman has since been safely returned to his parents.

A relative of the husband-wife duo suffering injuries from the accident took to social media to announce that both individuals have fractured left ankles and fractured spines. Shameka is also said to have suffered broken ribs. Brent was scheduled to have surgery on his left foot on Monday.

No further details have been released at this time. MHP continues to investigate the crash.
