COVID-19 death toll in Mississippi surpasses 5,000

In today’s report from the Mississippi State Department of Health, the death toll from COVID-19 in Mississippi has surpassed 5,000. 

With the confirmation of *38 additional deaths, 5,013 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus. Today’s report includes 2,791 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total up to 228,235. 

*MSDH Note: 4 COVID-19 related deaths occurred between December 4 and December 31, identified from death certificate reports.

Additionally, overall COVID-19-related hospitalizations have exceeded 1,400 for the first time during the pandemic. 

The MSDH continues its vaccination efforts across the state through 18 drive-thru locations for healthcare workers. Starting next week, those over the age of 75 will be eligible to receive the shot. For appointment information, click here.
