Deputy injured, suspect killed in Meridian shooting

An investigation is taking place after an officer-involved shooting in Meridian.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department reports that a deputy was shot, sustaining non-fatal injuries, but retaliated and killed an unidentified suspect.

According to police, the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a person believed to be a drunk driver on Poplar Springs Drive Friday night. A male passenger was asked to exit the vehicle. Then, he discharged a weapon at the deputy, authorities report.

The deputy responded by discharging his weapon, striking the subject with fatal injuries. The driver was arrested with no injuries or further incident.

State authorities with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are currently assessing this incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
