UPDATE: Brookhaven mayor released from hospital

Update:

Assuring news as Brookhaven Mayor Joe Cox has been released from the hospital after being admitted into the ICU on July 17.

The mayor used the City of Brookhaven’s Facebook account to inform Mississippians that while he is still experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, he is back at home.

Cox also used the post to thank the staff at King’s Daughter Medical Center and ask people to continue praying for his health.

Original Report:

Brookhaven Mayor Joe Cox has been admitted to the ICU at King’s Daughter Medical Center due to complications from COVID-19.

The city of Brookhaven released a statement on Facebook in regard to the health of Cox:

“As you know, many elected officials have tested positive for COVID-19 during the last several weeks, including Brookhaven Mayor Joe Cox. Earlier today, Mayor Cox was admitted to Kings Daughter’s Medical Center ICU; however, he is in regular communication with our exceptional city staff and officials to ensure the seamless operation of our city.

COVID-19 is not a hoax. It is a very real and highly contagious respiratory disease easily spread from person to person. There is currently no approved vaccine or antiviral treatment for this disease, which is all the more reason for everyone, not just a few, to follow all preventive measures to help protect yourself, as well as family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.

Please keep our mayor and his wife, Angie, in your thoughts. Join us in praying for healing and a full recovery.”

While other Mississippi mayors have reportedly contracted the virus, Cox is the first Mississippi mayor to be admitted to a hospital after testing positive for COVID-19.

Thus far, COVID-19 has forced two Mississippi representatives, Earle S. Banks and Manly Barton, to be hospitalized.
