Indianola Mississippi Freedom House

Mississippi Heritage Trust works to save and renew places meaningful to Mississippians and their history. Recently, they announced the 12th List of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in Mississippi. Since 1999 the list has provided preservation efforts for 120 sites listed as endangered since.

Lolly RashExecutive Director Mississippi Heritage Trust and Felicia King joined Rebecca Turner on Good Things to share her family’s property selected for this year’s 10 Most Endangered List.

When Felicia King inherited family property in Indianola, she was surprised to learn about its role in the Civil Rights movement.

After the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party’s headquarters in Indianola was bombed, King’s grandfather rented the house to civil rights workers. Due to the constant threat of violence, the connection of these modest residential structures to the Civil Rights movement was often kept secret. While Canton has restored its Freedom House to become a museum, other communities, like Shaw and Promise Land, are just now rediscovering these Civil Rights landmarks.
