Arguably one of the best and inarguably one of the most influential high school football teams in Mississippi history is being honored through a new proclamation.
Jackson Mayor John Horhn declared Friday as “1975 Callaway High School Football Championship Day” for the 50th anniversary of the Chargers’ last state title.
“The 1975 Callaway Chargers showed what can be achieved through teamwork, discipline, and heart,” Horhn said. “Their success brought pride not only to Callaway High School but to the entire city of Jackson. Today, we honor their extraordinary talent and legacy that continue to inspire generations.”
That Chargers team completed an undefeated 12-game season and captured the Mississippi High School State Football Championship. The team also earned the Capital Zone, North Mississippi Division, and overall Big Eight Conference titles.
Led by head coach Charles Allman and assistant coaches Odell Jenkins, Hill Denson, and W.J. Bilbro, the 1975 team became more than champions just years into school integration, Horhn added. They emerged as “symbols of unity and excellence during a pivotal period of change in Jackson and across Mississippi.”
The team’s story remains an enduring part of Mississippi sports history with the state championship trophy currently on display at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson.
