A juvenile has been taken into custody after online threats were made against Pearl Junior High and Pearl High School.
The Pearl Police Department confirmed the suspect was taken into custody Thursday morning after the threats were made on Wednesday. The suspect’s name is not being released at this time.
While Chief Nick McLendon said no active threats remain, law enforcement will be upped at all schools within the Pearl Public School District for the time being.
“This morning, the Pearl Police Department – working in coordination with the FBI – detained a juvenile in connection with online posts that were construed as threats,” McLendon said in a statement. “While there are no active threats at this time, out of an abundance of caution, additional law enforcement resources will be present in our schools.”
The investigation and subsequent arrest was a joint effort between multiple divisions of the Pearl Police Department, Department of Homeland Security, and FBI Jackson Field Office. The school district also released a statement, thanking law enforcement for its quick response and asking students to report any suspicious behavior or social media posts.
“Thanks to the swift response of the Pearl Police Department and Homeland Security, an arrest has been made,” the statement reads. “We’re also grateful to those who quickly reported their concerns – your vigilance helps keep our schools safe.
“Please continue reminding students to take all threats seriously and always report anything that feels unsafe to a trusted adult or school staff member. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.”
