The Mississippi House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday that would ban gender-affirming care for minors.
As one of more than two dozen states seeking to restrict transgender health care access, the “Regular Experimental Adolescent Procedures (REAP) Act” would prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from receiving hormone treatments or therapy.
“What this is attempting to do is anyone under the age of 18 who is transgendered and wants to go through a procedure or through therapy, they have to be 18 before they can do that,” Rep. Nick Bain, R-Corinth, said.
Bain also explained that under the bill, any physician who knowingly provides gender transition procedures or therapy could be at risk of losing their medical licenses or being sued.
After a 78-30 vote in the House, the REAP Act now heads to the Senate.
