Missing Jackson woman found safe in California

A Jackson woman who had been missing since Thursday was found safe in a national park in California.

Reports say the massive search for Mary Gomez ended Monday after a plane spotted the letters “SOS” spelled out in rocks.

The 56-year-old is a travelling nurse who didn’t arrive for work in San Francisco on Friday. Her car was found early Sunday morning.

Park Rangers say Gomez, who was found safe, was in steep terrain and over three miles from the nearest trail.

Mary’s daughter, Emily, posted the following to her Facebook page, thanking those involved in finding her mother.

I truly cannot say how AMAZINGGG the National Park Service is!!! I want to share my appreciation and a little of my experience.

Over the course of these days the Kong’s Canyon and Sequoia NP had a dedicated person to my dad and me to answer any and all questions candidly, to be emotional support, to give us every update on Mom, and so much more.

Before the car was found, anything between the park and SF was fair game. To my understanding, it was the park service that asked Fresno County to search for her.
The NPS brought in dogs and search teams, helicopters and a plane. They organized with the CA Hwy Patrol and the Air Force and any other party to get the necessary resources. Every day they brought in more and more resources.

I honestly don’t know how Dad and I would have gotten along without them and their amazing efforts. Seeing and being up to date on everything they were doing made it bearable (although it still sucked) to sit in the office and stay out of the way of the search teams.

They will forever have a special place in my heart.
