Mississippi to start a produce prescription program

You’ve heard Hippocrates’ famous quote about letting food be your medicine and your medicine your food. While food shouldn’t take the place of meaningful-medications, there is truth to a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help prevent the need for certain medications.

CDC’s State Indicator Report on Fruits and vegetables, 2018, shows national and state-level fruit and vegetable access and production data for 50 states and the District of Columbia. In Mississippi, only 8.7% of adults meet the daily fruit intake recommendation, and only 6.2% of adults meet the daily vegetable intake recommendation.

Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption helps the health of the consumer, and also the Mississippi farmer. Double Up Food Bucks Mississipp geared up to offer a comprehensive program. Food incentive programs will help to address hunger, food insecurity, and chronic disease by encouraging the purchase and consumption of fresh produce.

Erin W. Smith, a Mississippi farmer, and health advocate joined Rebecca Turner on Good Things to talk about Double Up Food Bucks Mississippi, and The Sip’s Fresh Script: Produce Prescription Program.
