A Mooreville High School student was arrested for allegedly using an airsoft gun to make threats against another student at a football game.
The incident reportedly took place during Mooreville’s home game versus Itawamba Agricultural High School on Friday. School resource officers at the scene were notified that a student had an airsoft gun. The pupil was able to flee the campus before being tracked down by authorities.
An airsoft gun is a replica firearm that shoots plastic projectiles. While they are not lethal, people have used them to mimic an actual firearm for intimidation purposes.
On Monday, resource officers and school administrators began gathering statements from students who were suspected of knowing about the incident. Through investigation, it was confirmed that the student possessed an airsoft gun during the game and also directed threats toward another student. The student involved, whose name was not released, was handcuffed.
“I want to thank our SRO Division for the hours of work and investigation dedicated to this case,” Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said. “I also appreciate the prompt and serious response from Mooreville School Administrators. This incident is a strong example of the effective partnership we share with our schools in keeping our campuses safe.”
The case is being handled by the local youth court.
