After three straight days below 1,000, today’s report from the Department of Health lists 1,081 new cases of COVID-19.

Today’s report brings Mississippi’s total number of cases up to 69,374. With the confirmation of *45 additional deaths, 1,989 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.

MSDH Note: 17 confirmed COVID-19 related deaths occurred between July 26 and August 6, identified from death certificate reports.

The latest hospital data posted (Tuesday’s report) shows an increase in overall hospitalizations and a slight decrease in ICU bed usage.

During Tuesday’s press briefing, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs stated that 27 schools have reported COVID-19 cases with a total of 42 cases — 17 staff members and 25 students.

Despite today’s uptick in cases, Governor Tate Reeves did recently state that Mississippi’s 7-day average had dropped by nearly 30% since a peak on July 30th.
