For the third day in a row, the Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases.

Today’s report of 1,305 new cases — the highest one-day increase of the week — brings the state’s total up to 131,970. With the confirmation of 5 additional deaths, 3,519 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.

Overall hospitalizations continue to steadily rise in the latest data from the MSDH.

This trend is likely to continue as back in July, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs detailed what the addition of 1,000 new cases will do the healthcare system.

“Every day that we add 1,000 new cases, statistically, that’s another 170 patients that are likely going to be in the hospital in the next couple of weeks,” he said at the time.

During a Facebook Live session Thursday, Governor Tate Reeves addressed the rising number of cases and hospitalizations.

The number of active outbreaks in Mississippi long-term care facilities has grown to 140 after it was down to 105 on Sunday.

As of Monday, an estimated 111,430 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
