State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs warned that Monday’s decrease in new COVID-19 cases wasn’t likely to become a trend as the Department of Health reported under 700 new cases to begin the week. Today, the Department of Health is reporting 1,342 new cases of COVID-19 and *42 additional deaths.

*MSDH Note: 2 confirmed COVID-19 related deaths occurred between June 3 and July 27, identified from death certificate reports.

Today’s report brings Mississippi’s total number of cases up to 54,299. 1,543 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.

Hospitalizations did rise in today’s report, but ICU bed usage did drop below 300.

The Department of Health is now able to estimate that 35,071 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.

Currently, 29 Mississippi counties are under an executive order implementing mask mandates and stricter social distancing guidelines. Monday, Governor Tate Reeves indicated that they are looking at nine additional counties that could be added to the order in the coming days.

Restrictions were also recently placed on bars statewide in order to limit the spread of the virus within Mississippi’s younger population.
