Gov. Tate Reeves has set special elections following the deaths of two state lawmakers.
Reeves is asking voters in both House District 70 (part of Hinds County) and House District 77 (parts of Rankin and Simpson counties) to go to the ballot box on Nov. 3. They will be voting to fill vacancies created by the deaths of Reps. Bo Brown and Price Wallace.
Brown, a Democrat who represented House District 70 since 2020, passed away on June 8 at the age of 81. He had been battling a “long illness,” according to his family, and is remembered for his efforts to help Jackson through his legislative work. Brown previously served as president of the Jackson City Council and was also a teacher and coach.
Wallace, a Republican who represented House District 77 since 2018, passed away on June 3 at the age of 64. A cause of death has not been announced. He is remembered for his work in the agriculture sector and his efforts to restore the state’s ballot initiative process.
Nov. 3 will also be a statewide election day with Mississippi voters casting ballots in congressional midterm races. All four U.S. House seats and one U.S. Senate seat will be on the ballot.
The qualifying deadline for candidates in both special elections is Aug. 20.
