The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting under 100 new cases of COVID-19 and no additional  deaths.

Today’s report of 95 new cases brings the state’s total up to 302,932. To date, 6,956 Mississippians have passed away from the virus.

Hospital data continues to show positive trends with overall hospitalizations continuing to dwindle.

Late last week, the MSDH confirmed the state’s first case of the South African variant. The South African strain of COVID-19 does appear to be more contagious than the original strain, but health officials say it doesn’t appear to be more deadly, unlike the UK variant which was confirmed in Mississippi back in February. Since then, 10 cases of the UK variant have been identified by MSDH.

With vaccine eligibility expanded to all Mississippians, the state is nearing the 1 million dose milestone. That mark will likely be reached today with the MSDH currently reporting around 987,000 administered doses.
