Nissan is axing electric vehicle production at its plant in Canton.
Officials with the auto giant announced this week that they would no longer build EVs in central Mississippi due to a lack of market demand in the U.S. Nissan halting EV production in Canton, however, will not affect the manufacturing of the company’s other vehicles at the assembly plant.
The announcement comes nearly four years after Nissan invested $500 million to manufacture two EV models by 2025.
Nissan’s Canton facility is one of the company’s largest manufacturing sites, and officials have assured that the Mississippi location will still play a crucial role in automobile production – just not EVs. Nissan Canton will produce the new Xterra models, along with Frontier trucks and Altima sedans, along with amenities for those vehicles.
The Canton plant opened in 2003 and was the subject of a $950 million capital investment by the Japanese company, which was the largest investment in state history at the time.
