Pearl Lady Pirates looking to win back to back championship with once deployed coach back stateside

The Pearl Lady Pirates won their first basketball title since 1994 in 2019, defeating Terry in the MHSAA girls 6A state championship.

Ending a 25-year championship drought was only part of their story. The 2019 Pearl Lady Pirates team won the gold ball while their head coach, Lacy Kennedy, was deployed in Kuwait.

Fast forward to the 2020 basketball season, and the Lady Pirates find themselves in familiar territory with only four wins to get a second championship title. But this time their coach is back stateside and courtside to witness it all.

Coach Lacy Kennedy and Olivia Knight, a senior point guard for the Lady Pirates, sat down with Rebecca Turner to share the teams’ unique journey on and off the court.
