Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) announced that the private recreational fishing season for Red Snapper has re-opened. The season is set to run through September 2nd at 11:59 p.m. and will be open seven days a week.
When fishing for Red Snapper, anglers may fish out to 200 nautical miles. The recreational Red Snapper season will close if the assigned quota for recreational fishermen is reached at any point after the season opens. It will also close if the Gulf-wide quota is reached.
All anglers are required to register their Red Snapper fishing trips through MDMR’s Tails n’ Scales program, which is available through a smartphone app, a website, and a call center. Anglers must have a trip number when they are out on the water and closeout that trip before creating a new one. In an effort to better estimate the harvest level of Greater Amberjack landed in Mississippi, MDMR is asking anglers to indicate the number of Greater Amberjack harvested in the Tails n’ Scales reporting system if they were harvested while on a Red Snapper trip. The additional Greater Amberjack reporting is voluntary.
