Meridian police confirm that the remains found in garbage bags last week belonged to a small child.

According to the Meridian Star, Meridian Police Chief Benny Dubose says an autopsy found the badly decomposed body had a broken rib on one side, cracked ribs on the other, and burns.

Celeste Louise Smith of Meridian has been charged with capital murder and child neglect. She led police to the body in her basement last week.  She is being held without bond.

A DNA test will be conducted to determine the child’s identity.

A five-year-old boy has been reported missing in the area and authorities say Smith once took care of the child and his siblings.
