A Ridgeland mother has been arrested after leaving her two toddlers in a flooding apartment.
Police were dispatched to the Sunchase Apartment complex on William Boulevard at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Monday in reference to a unit that was flooding. Maintenance on staff was contacted and opened the apartment after no one would answer the door.
While inside, officers encountered an unclothed 2-year-old male child wandering the apartment and a 2-year-old female child asleep in a crib. A bathtub in the unit was reportedly left running and had flooded the apartment, causing water to seep through the ceiling of the unit below.
According to authorities, multiple attempts to contact a responsible adult proved fruitless. Officers took custody of the children and contacted Child Protection Services for assistance with finding proper care.
The grandmother of the children was finally reached, police report, and she made contact with the mother, 31-year-old Taylor Devone Sherman. The grandmother, whose name was not released, and Sherman arrived at the Ridgeland Police Department hours later, and the mother admitted to leaving the children at home unattended for several hours.
Sherman was arrested and charged with two counts of felony child neglect. She is being held without bond at the Madison County Detention Center. The children are now safe in the custody of Child Protection Services at a foster home, according to Ridgeland police.
