The National Weather Service in Jackson says if you’re heading to the Alabama or Northwest Florida beaches this week or weekend, know that there is a HIGH RISK for rip currents.

Rip currents flow away from the shoreline, can quickly pull you from shore into deep water, and become life-threatening.

If rip currents risks are high, you should avoid the water. But, if you do venture in and get caught in one, what should you do? Don’t fight the current. Swim out of it and then to shore, but if you can’t escape, don’t panic – just float or tread water.

Please heed the advice of beach patrols and flag warning systems.
