Teammates react to USM quarterback’s departure

Southern Miss redshirt senior quarterback Jack Abraham is entering the transfer portal.

The report from The Sun Herald comes just four days after interim head coach Tim Billings acknowledged that the preseason All-Conference USA signal caller was no longer with the team.

“One thing about Jack [is that] he was here and no one worked any harder than he did and was more committed to this football team while he was here, but he’s no longer here,” Billings, who is the Golden Eagles’ third acting head coach this season, said during his Monday press conference.

Ahead of their October 24th game against Liberty, Abraham tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him to sit out. Then, on October 31st versus Rice, he suffered a concussion, which landed him on the IR for the past two weeks.

Although Abraham has battled health issues for the majority of the 2020 season, some of his now ex-teammates, including Frank Gore, Jr., feel as if the Oxford native gave up on his team.

In a now-deleted tweet, Gore expressed his frustration with Abraham before saying “let’s ride 6,” possibly alluding to the number worn by sophomore quarterback Tate Whatley. Playing sparingly this season, Whatley has respectably accounted for 234 total yards and five touchdowns.

The team’s leading receiver, Jason Brownlee, also went to Twitter after finding out Abraham was transferring, insinuating that the team is “all good.”

Abraham, who is allowed one more year of eligibility due to the NCAA granting all fall athletes an extra year of play, will now look to compete for his fourth school in five years. Over the course of his time as a Golden Eagle, he completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 7,067 yards and 41 touchdowns with 29 interceptions.
