The University of Mississippi Medical Center will continue to only handle primary hospital services and emergency cases at this time, with all clinic locations remaining closed due to Thursday’s cyberattack.
“All UMMC clinic locations will be closed today due to a system-wide network outage. Any scheduled ambulatory surgeries will also be cancelled,” a mass text the hospital sent to patients on Friday reads. “We are very sorry for any inconvenience and will be reaching out to you once systems are up to reschedule your [appointment] or surgery.”
UMMC, the state’s largest hospital, suffered a hit to its IT systems and access to medical records as a result of the cyberattack. The attack also compromised UMMC’s website and some phone lines. The website was still down as of Friday morning.
In the meantime, UMMC officials say the alleged hackers “have communicated to us.” The hospital is working with law enforcement on the next steps.
The FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, among other agencies, are investigating this case. UMMC officials warn that getting back online could be a multi-day process.
UMMC operates seven hospitals – including the state’s largest in Jackson – 35 clinics, and more than 200 telehealth sites statewide.
