Water Valley unofficially broke a Guinness World Record

During the 50th annual Water Valley Watermelon Carnival unofficially broke the Guinness World Record for the Largest Watermelon-Eating Contest with 754 participants competing simultaneously, beating the record set last year in Safety Harbor, Fla, with 259 participants.

Water Valley Chamber of Commerce spearheaded this endeavor and the community rallied around the idea of breaking a world record.

Melon history continued to be made in the Valley after a 202 pound watermelon took first place in the annual watermelon auction. Grown by Hal Vaughn, his 202 pound melon raised a record amount of money to help fund the Elliot Scholarship.

Kathryn York, a candidate for Mississippi Senate, purchased the winning melon in a bidding war beating out Kenny Harmon with the $500 dollar bid. Kathryn joined Rebecca Turner on Good Things to talk about the exciting event.
