Woman found dead on Mississippi River barge was wearing ‘Oxford’ shirt as identity remains unknown

Authorities in Memphis are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman’s body found on a Mississippi River barge over the weekend.

On Saturday around 7:15 a.m., crew members discovered a body during a routine vessel inspection as the barge was traveling upriver near Shelby Forest. Upon arrival of deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the person was declared dead, and an investigation was launched into the matter.

As more questions remain at this time than answers, the SCSO has released a description of the woman with hopes that someone will have relevant information that could lead to her identification.

While a precise age was not able to be determined, deputies say the woman was white with blonde hair and somewhere between 20 and 40 years old. She was wearing a pink shirt with the word, “Oxford,” written on it, a blue and white flannel shirt, black tights, and a knee brace on her left leg.

This is the second body found in the area in the month. On Sept. 23, missing woman Tamia Taylor was found on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River. Law enforcement had been looking for Taylor, a native of Southaven, for days after she was last seen getting on a riverboat cruise in Memphis as she celebrated her 21st birthday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the SCSO at (901)222-5500.
