A bronze statue of Emmett Till is scheduled to be created and installed in Greenwood, Mississippi, on October 1 at Rail Spike Park.

Two contracts between a Utah-based company called Big Statues and Leflore County were passed, totaling over $115,000.

Emmett Till was a 14-year-old who was horrifically murdered by white supremacists in Mississippi in 1955 while visiting relatives in the Mississippi Delta.

Till was abducted and beaten before being shot after he allegedly whistled at a white woman at a grocery store. The grocery store was in Money, a small town in Leflore County, and is ten miles from the location of the expected placement of the statue.

The impact of Till’s death on the country has lasted for decades and has sparked the U.S. House of Representatives recent passage of bill called the Emmett Till Antilynching Act. All four Mississippi representatives voted “yea” on the bill.
