Former Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez likely had his phone flooded by family and friends wishing him a happy birthday on Saturday. But the biggest call came from the MLB’s Chicago White Sox with word that the 2022 college national champion was being called up to the big leagues.
The White Sox, the organization that drafted Gonzalez in the first round in 2023, moved the minor league infielder up to the majors after Munetaka Murakami suffered a hamstring strain. Gonzalez was deservedly elevated as he has been one of the hottest hitters in the minors during the month of May, batting .344 with 11 home runs, 36 RBI, and 21 runs scored.
He hit four home runs in his last three MiLB games and has seven hits in his last eight plate appearances. Over 52 games with the Charlotte Knights in 2026, Gonzalez is hitting .317 with 19 home runs, 62 RBI, and an OPS of 1.087. He has already set career highs in those categories and was closing in on career highs in runs and total bases before the call-up.

Over three seasons with Ole Miss, Gonzalez hit .319 in his career with 40 home runs, 158 RBI, and 186 runs scored over 186 career games. He ranks in the top 10 in program history in home runs, total bases, runs scored, RBI, and walks. His 73 runs scored in 2021 are the second-most in a single season in program history.
The California native was named the D1Baseball Freshman of the Year, a Second Team All-American, and a First Team Freshman All-American in 2021 after he led all freshmen nationally in hits and runs scored. He earned All-SEC and ABCA All-South Region honors in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and also played for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in both 2021 and 2022.
