One person is dead in Forrest County as severe flooding continues to impact the area.
Gov. Tate Reeves confirmed the death on social media, though neither he nor the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has released additional details.
“Tragically, Forrest County has reported one death as a result of the flooding. Please pray for the family during this incredibly difficult time,” Reeves said, adding that MEMA is coordinating with local emergency managers and assisting affected communities.

Earlier Monday, WDAM-TV reported that a body was discovered in Petal after an SUV became submerged near the local Walmart. A producer at the scene reportedly witnessed the vehicle being swept away by strong currents as bystanders attempted to help the woman inside. The SUV then flipped before she could escape.
Floodwaters in Petal were estimated to have reached 12 feet before beginning to recede Monday afternoon.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for Petal and other parts of Forrest County through 10 p.m. A flash flood warning also remains in effect for southeast Lamar County through 10 p.m. Warnings are subject to change.
